Chiffon is a very light, sheer fabric woven from highly twisted yarns. Its fine, slightly grainy surface gives movement without the glossy smoothness of satin. It may be made from silk, polyester, viscose or blends, and the fibre content changes both the feel and the care required.
What to expect
Chiffon floats, layers well and creates soft volume in dresses, blouses, scarves and sleeves. A single layer is usually transparent, so check the lining and seam finish rather than judging only the outer fabric. Silk chiffon tends to feel softer and regulate temperature better; synthetic versions are often more resistant to creasing but may hold static and feel warmer.
Hold the garment to the light. The weave should look even, without snags, stretched needle holes or puckered seams. Move your arms and sit down to make sure a fitted lining does not pull against the loose outer layer. Jewellery, rough bags and sharp nails can catch the fine threads.
Care
Follow the label. Many silk or embellished pieces require professional cleaning. If gentle washing is allowed, use cool water, minimal agitation and no wringing. Dry away from direct heat, supporting the garment so wet weight does not distort it. Steam from a safe distance; a hot iron can flatten texture or damage synthetic fibres.
Choose chiffon for lightness and layered movement, not opacity or hard structure.
