Before collecting linen items for one wash, compare their labels. A shirt, trousers and blazer can need different methods despite similar fibre content. A lining or buttons may require dry cleaning.
Group by the instructions
Record the permitted washing method and restrictions for each item. Separate garments whose instructions cannot be met in one process. Fibre names alone do not select a programme or justify high temperatures. Clarify an unreadable label before washing.
Inspect the garment details
On shirts inspect collars and cuffs; on trousers the waistband, pockets and hems; on blazers also the lining and fastenings. Empty pockets and note stains and existing damage. Check instructions for detachable parts. Do not unpick or remove garment components to make a chosen programme suitable.
Select settings for the finished item
Compare the label with the machine and detergent instructions. Check actual temperature, cycle and spin settings, including automatic values. Do not apply advice for white tablecloths to a coloured blazer. If professional cleaning is needed, provide a stain description and information about previous care.
Assess after drying
Plan drying and any ironing according to the label before starting. Once dry, inspect seam lines, waistband, collar and lining alignment. Distinguish an ordinary crease from altered size or uneven layers. Do not correct fit through a stronger wash; keep a record of settings to help investigate a problem.
