Lining, pleats, an elasticated waistband and decorations need attention when arranging a skirt to dry. Check its individual components and use the position specified for that garment. The fabric’s appearance alone is not enough to choose a method.
Read the drying instructions
Being washable does not automatically make a skirt suitable for tumble drying. Read the complete care guidance, including instructions about position and location. If a symbol is unfamiliar, clarify it before placing the damp skirt on a hanger or in a machine.
Separate folded layers
Check whether the lining has folded beneath the outer material. Arrange the pockets and hem without stretching the garment. On a skirt with a slit, make sure its edges have not twisted around each other.
Keep pleats in their intended arrangement. Do not assume their appearance tells you how they can be heated or ironed later. The care instructions determine this, rather than a resemblance to another skirt.
Plan support for the entire skirt
Within the permitted method, check that the garment is supported evenly and the hem does not touch the floor. If flat drying is recommended, allow room for the whole shape. Move decorative buckles and components clear of neighbouring items they could catch when repositioned.
Check the waistband and lining before storing
Feel the waistband, zip area, hem and inner layers. Do not judge dryness solely from the middle of an outer panel. Fold or hang the skirt for storage only once it is completely dry. Treat any ironing as a separate step requiring a check of the label.
